Westland Landfill Project

• The Dickerson Power Plant, located 18 miles south of Frederick, MD, operated from 1959 to 2020.
• In the summer of 2017, MERG and FSU conducted a stie visit in order to obtain near-surface coal ash samples for chemical & physical analysis.
• Initial chemical/physical analysis was acceptable to the cement industry and deeper test pits were excavated for additional ash sampling.
• A deconstruction plan for the landfill was developed by MERG and approved by the State of Maryland.
• Ash excavation and transfer to Lehigh Cement began in June 2019 and will continue for several more years. As of April 2022, 339,000 tons of ash has been removed.
